Sarasota, FL May 31th - Sam Schmidt Motorsports is the defending champion of
the Firestone Freedom 100 and has been a dominating force at this historic oval
track since the series began. SSM driver Josef Newgarden has never raced on
an oval before coming to Indy but has already established himself as the driver to
beat in the series. After a rained out qualifying session Newgarden lined up on
the front row of the field based on his points standings in the series. The battle
between the front-runners was intense but when the checkered flag flew
Newgarden was the winner of his first oval race.

When the green flag dropped Newgarden displayed his quick adaptation to the
historic oval battling with the front-runners while drafting and passing his way to
the front. Sam Schmidt Motorsports is always at the top of the speed charts at
the Firestone Freedom 100 and was on the pole for the 100th Indy 500 with their
new-formed IndyCar team. This was the first time Josef Newgarden, the young
driver from Tennessee, had ever raced on an oval and showed great speed in
the limited practice and a rained out qualifying session. This is the third
consecutive win for SSM at the Freedom 100 and an unprecedented six wins of
nine races held at Indy.

An incident on Lap 34 involving the No. 4 Belardi Auto Racing Special of Jorge
Goncalvez and the No. 9 Liberty Engineering Racing Special of teammate
Anders Krohn prevented the race to be completed under green.

“It’s an unbelievable achievement for the team,” said Newgarden,
“I’m so grateful, and I have to thank Esteban because he helped me the whole race. It’s
not really the way I wanted to win it, but I’ll take it.”

“We see great things for Josef in the future,” said Blake Fuller, President of
Braille Battery. “His performance at Indy shows his ability to adapt to ovals which
will help propel him to the next level of IndyCar. Were proud to be a small part of
his racing career.”
