Braille Indy Car Wins Season Opener
BRAILLE BATTERY SPONSORED INDY LIGHTS CAR WINS SEASON OPENER AT ST. PETERSBURG GP
Sarasota, FL March 30th – The Indy Lights season kicked off on the streets of St. Petersburg, FL in front of record crowds and beautiful weather. Sam Schmidt Motorsports is last year’s winner of this race and is the defending championship Indy Lights team. The SSM team qualified 1-2-3 for the start and would finish with a 1-2 podium with Josef Newgarden of Tennessee holding off his teammate Connor Daly for the win.
Race teams have a track they dominate at and Sam Schmidt Motorsports is always at the top of the speed charts at the St. Petersburg Grand Prix. Josef Newgarden, the young driver from Tennessee, didn’t disappoint as he was fast in every practice and would lead 34 of the 45-lap race winning his first career Indy Lights race ever. The young American is a recent graduate from the European GP3 series and is the only American to win the famed Formula Ford Festival in the UK in 2008.
“I don’t know what to say, I am so happy for everyone else,” said Newgarden, who is the ninth driver to win their initial Firestone Indy Lights race. “This is way beyond me. It takes the efforts of the entire team that worked so hard over the winter to make this win happen. I am so happy for Sam Schmidt and proud to be driving for him and give him a victory.”
“Josef has been on our radar since his Formula Ford Festival win in the UK,” said Blake Fuller owner of Braille Battery. “Our product directly effects the young talented drivers of tomorrow and Josef is a great ambassador for our batterty technology. We are very fortunate to be involved with Sam and his race team and look forward to expanding our involvement in Indy Lights and the Indycar series in the near future.”
Braille Lithium Batteries will start the next big race of the season with the American Le Mans series April 13-17 on the streets of Long Beach, California.
